Frequently Asked Questions
We've all had those questions that seem to keep cropping up, asked continuously by different people at different times. So, in an attempt to save us all some time, here's a FAQ with some of the common queries...
FAQ
Q: What is this? A: Avengers Assembled is a free-form, online role-playing community. That means you have the freedom to explore your characters and stories in any manner you like (within the rules, of course). Q: When is the game set? A: We set the game roughly in the area of year one for all heroes and villains, allowing players to form groups and alliances naturally over the course of play. Q: Where can I find out more information about who my character is and what they've done? A: I personally like the Marvel Universe Wiki. If I can't find what I need there, which is rare, I go to the general wikipedia page or right to the source at Marvel.com. I'm sure there are other handy sites, but those should cover anything you might need for bio, powers, etc. Q: What are the stat numbers for? Do we figure out our character's fights that way? A: They're basically just to give you a rough, visual guideline of how one character stacks up against another in terms of abilities. No stat system in the world could accurately cover all the depth and variety that exists in the Marvel Universe. Character battles will be resolved mostly by players in their own threads. When the occasion arises when that can't happen for some reason, the admins will sort it out. Q: Where do I find my characters stats? A: For the purposes of this board, we advise using the stats typically found with character entries at marvel.com/universe/Main_Page. These tend to be the most consistent (and sensible!) numbers available on the web. If for whatever reason the stats of the character for whom you are applying are not available, then the moderators will work with you to come up with something. Q: Do I need to craft my application completely by hand from scratch? A: God no. I think that RPG applications are a necessary evil. A labor-intensive, results-minimal pain in the ass. We really just want to see that you know where the character should fit in the timeline of the board. The main thing that you will have to craft is your sample post, naturally. Don't post someone else's just to try and get the character. Q: So, do I need to write a sample post for every character I apply for? A: No. This will be somewhat subjective, but once we get an idea of how you can write, we'll waive the sample. We reserve the right to ask for one if you suddenly decide to write a type of character we've never seen you write before. For example, I would expect one of myself if I decided to write Captain America, simply because he is antithetical to the type of characters I typically write. In order to make the sample post more practical, I also try to have it be a post that you would use in the game if approved. Then it's not really a wasted effort at all. Q: I can't find a canon I want to write. Can I play an original character? A: Of course! It's a big world out there. It would be a little limiting to say you could only write canon characters which, when you get right down to it, are ultimately just someone else's original character. Most everyone has a preference for one type or the other. That's all up to you. Q: Do I have to do a sample post for an original character? A: Actually, nope. That's an exception. Since the application for an original character has to come entirely from your head, that alone will tell us about the character, if you've given thought to how they fit in the setting and also how you write. |
